Smith Shop Intern

February 21, 2015

Applicants should have a solid technical foundation in jewelry making, hollowware, and/or blacksmithing. In addition to a demonstrated metalsmithing proficiency, the successful candidate will be able to manage tasks independently, communicate effectively, and multi-task. Smith Shop seeks applicants who desire to contribute to a community oriented studio that executes commission and production work, offers classes and workshops, and operates within a larger creative entrepreneurial hub in Detroit. A BFA in metals or equivalent experience is preferable.

Interns will be required to work 35 hours per week on Smith Shop projects and will be encouraged to develop their own artistic work in off hours. Interns will have 24-hour studio access and be able to take free classes. A modest housing stipend is available for those relocating to Detroit. Paid teaching opportunities are available for qualified candidates. The internship is a three-month term with the possibility to extend the term after a performance review. In general, the terms of the internship are flexible and will be negotiated during the interview process. Interns should plan to arrive in Detroit in January 2017.
